noun
A taxonomic kingdom of the domain Eukaryota that includes land plants, green algae, red algae, and glaucophytes
Supplement
Kingdom Archaeplastida is a taxonomic group comprised of land plants, green algae, red algae, and glaucophytes. It is sometimes used in synonymous to Plantae. However, the stricter use of the term Plantae is one that which includes only the land plants and green algae. Archaeplastida is more general in including the red algae and the glaucophytes.
Kingdom is previously the highest taxonomic group in the scheme of classifying organisms. Newer classification scheme though such as that introduced by Carl Woese includes three domains. In this scheme, domain is the most general taxon and kingdom is only next to the hierarchy. In this classification scheme, there are three subkingdoms that comprise Kindgom Archaeplastida. These are Plantae, the red algae and glaucophytes. One of the fundamental and distinctive features of the members of Archaeplastida is the presence of the chloroplasts. They also lack centrioles and have mitochondria. They also have a cell wall and cellulose. The food produced from photosynthesis is stored in the form of starch.
