A peptide hormone released by the atrial heart muscle cells in response to atrial distention, hypertension, and hypervolemia. It is a potent vasodilator and contributes in the development of natriuresis. It functions in the homeostatic regulation of body water, sodium, potassium, and fat to lower blood pressure.
