Brevibacillus brevis has a size of at least 0.6-1.0 micrometer in diameter that is gram variable either gram-positive or gram-negative with long several peritrichous flagella which is primarily isolated from soil and food as well as in rhizospheres, paper products, milk, cheese and airborne dust. It is versatile and capable of respiration using simple organic compound like amino acid, sugar and organic acids which exhibits generation times at about 25 minutes. Its vegetative cell surface is laminated structure that consists of a capsule, layers of peptidoglycan and proteins on the outer surface
Brevibacillus brevis has a unique ability to produce antibiotic gramicidin or tyrocidin and molluscicidal activity. It has been employed successfully as host bacteria for extracellular production of protein such as thermophilic alpha-amylase and human epidermal growth factor.
Brevibacillus brevis is implicated in peritonitis on individual having hepatocellular carcinoma due probably from the ingestion of fermented foods containing Brevibacillus brevis spores yet it is rarely associated in infectious diseases.
