(1) A form of respiration in plants where carbon dioxide is released without the aid of (sun)light.
(2) Mitochondrial respiration in plants.
Note: The term is not limited to plants; microorganisms such as microalgae may also perform dark respiration

Dark respiration, or simply respiration, is respiration in plants regardless of light (i.e. whether light is present or absent) to distinguish it from photorespiration that occurs in the presence of light.
