For example, extracellular fluid is the fluid found outside the cell (or cells) in contrast to the intracellular fluid which is the fluid inside the cell. The intercellular fluid (or interstitial fluid located in between cells) is a component of extracellular fluid.
Word origin: from Latin extra- (outside of) + cellular from Latin cellulāris, equivalent to cellul(a) (live cell).
