Florigen
Since the 1930s it has been known that plants sense light (and daylength in particular) in the leaves and send a signal to the shoots to initiate flowering. The unknown plant growth substance was named florigen but was not identified. In 2007 George Coupland at the max Planck institute and Colin Turnbull at Imperial College london identified a protein called ft produced from the flowering locus t gene which behaved precisely as predicted for florigen.
