Definition
noun
(1) The anterior part of the alimentary canal that begins at the mouth to the end of the stomach or gizzard in some animals, whereas to the anterior portions of duodenum, at the opening of the bile duct, in other animals
(2) The portion of the embryonic alimentary canal that gives rise to pharynx, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, liver, pancreas, and lungs.

In adult vertebrates, the foregut is primarily for ingestion and partial digestion of food. In certain animals such as birds with crops, the foregut thus also functions for temporary storage of food.
