(1) The act or process of forming grains or granules, e.g. the granulation of powder and sugar.
(2) The formation of granulation tissue, i.e. the new connective tissue which replaces the initial fibrin clot on wounds.

Granulation is the major healing process occurring in second intention healing. Healing takes place from the bottom upward by filling in the dead space with granulation tissue.
Word origin: LL grānulum small grain + L –ātiōn– (s. of -ātiō), equiv. to -ā- s. vowel + –tiōn.
