It could be due to the resulting condition wherein the offspring of the primary cross contains multiple sets of chromosomes, which in turn could be due to failure of chromosome separation (disjunction) during meiosis. For instance, a mule, which is a hybrid between female horse and male donkey, could develop into adult but fails to develop functional gametes, therefore, is sterile.
