Joints of pelvic girdle

The joints of pelvic girdle, in anatomy, are the joints that unite the sacrum and the two hip bones, forming the pelvic girdle. These joints include the syndesmoses (the immovable joints) and the synovial joints. They are as follows:

  • Sacroiliac joint, i.e. the joint between sacrum and ilium and associated ligaments. The main function is to spread the weight of the upper body through the vertebral column to the hip bones.
  • Pubic symphysis, i.e. the joint in the midline of the body, between the pubic bones at the front of the pelvis, reinforced by two ligaments (the superior and the inferior pubic ligaments)
  • Sacrotuberal and sacrospinal ligaments
  • Obturator membrane, i.e. the thin membrane of strong interlacing fibers filling the obturator foramen
  • Synonyms: juncturae cinguli pelvici, articulationes cinguli membri inferioris, joints of inferior limb girdle.
