Any of the group of flagellate protozoa, characterized mainly by the presence of one or two flagella arising from a depression in the cell body and a kinetoplast within the large mitochondrion that extends the length of the body.

The kinetoplastids belong to order Kinetoplastida of subphylum Mastigophora. They are further divided into the biflagellate Bodonidae and uniflagellate Trypanosomatidae. Many of them cause diseases on vertebrates and invertebrates.
