noun, plural: markers
(general) Anything that marks or is used to mark, e.g. a location.
(genetics) A gene or DNA sequence with known physical location, and whose pattern of inheritance can be followed.
Supplement
In genetics, markers act as chromosomal landmarks. They are used to trace or identify specific region of a gene (especially one that is associated with an inherited disease) on a chromosome. They are also used to determine a linkage group or a recombination event.
