Definition
noun
A test used to identify bacteria by the way they metabolize a carbohydrate substrate (e.g. glucose) whether by fermentation or by oxidation.
Supplement
In this test, two tubes of Hugh & Leifon’s medium are used. One tube is covered while the other is not. A bacterial strain is an ‘oxidizer’ if it will produce acid only in the open tube, a ‘fermenter’ if it produces acid in both tubes.
