phosphoenolpyruvate
(Science: biochemistry) An important metabolic intermediate. The enol (less stable) form of pyruvic acid is trapped as its phosphate ester, giving the molecule a high phosphate transfer potential. Formed from 2 phosphoglycerate by the action of enolase.
