The part of the immune system consisting of the phagocytic cells situated in reticular connective tissue, as monocytes and macrophages in the lymph nodes and spleen.
Supplement
The Kupffer cells of the liver and histiocytes are also part of this system.
The RES is divided into:

  • primary lymphoid organ
  • secondary lymphoid organ
