(botany) Any of the flowering plants lacking petioles.

Flowering plants may be categorized into two groups: petiolate plants wherein petioles are present and sessile plants in which petioles are absent. A leaf lacking a petiole (leafstalk) is attached directly to the stem. An example of sessile plant is a grass plant wherein the base of the leaf is clasping the stem.
