Etymologically, splanchnic may come from the Greek word splankhnon or from the more common form splankhna (which is the plural form) that means organ. 1 The term splanchnic therefore is used in describing the organs in the abdominal cavity (called visceral organs).2 The following terms are examples of the usage of splanchnic”:

  • splanchnic tissue
  • splanchnic nerve
  • splanchnic ganglion
  • splanchnic mesoderm
  • splanchnic circulation
  • splanchnic anesthesia
  • splanchnic cavity

For instance, splanchnic circulation refers to the circulation of the gastrointestinal tract from the celiac trunk, the inferior mesenteric artery, and the superior mesenteric artery.3
Word origin: Greek splankhnon, splankhna (innards, entrails)
