Definition
noun
The pressure that builds up in the ventricle as the ventricle is being filled with blood, typically equivalent to the mean atrial pressure in the absence of A-V valvular gradient.
Supplement
During diastole, the blood flows into both the right and left atria via the open A-V valves. At the end of the diastole, when the atria contract, the blood flow into the ventricles is increased causing the rise in the ventricular filling pressure. This causes the mitral valve and tricuspid valve to snap shut, thus, generating the first heart sound (S1).
